Already averaging a 5 star rating on iTunes, “Sledgehammer” is edgy, different, and will be the first ever music video to premiere in IMAX theatres. “As a Star Trek fan,” Rihanna says, “I am honored to have the theme song for the new by Sia, Jesse Shatkin, and Rihanna herself, the new ballad showcases Rihanna’s vocals and genre versatility.
On June 27th, Rihanna let her Instagram fans in on her little secret that she had been working on since 2014, when she tweeted lyrics from the new ballad, and released her new single, “Sledgehammer,” as the theme song for Star Trek Beyond. It's like she's trying to market directly to me. Then she performs a song by Sia for a Star Trek movie. So, last year Rihanna has a duet with Sir Paul McCartney. A day after her performance in England and before her show in Glasgow Scotland, Rihanna took to Instagram on June 26th with a glimpse of Justin Lin’s sci-fi epic and the caption, “Got something for y’all tomorrow,” that sparked curiosity. I've loved lots of styles of music from when my parents would play The Beatles and sing along to now when my boyfriend plays and we sing along with Sia. ‘Sledgehammer’ is exactly what you would expect from a Sia co-write. In 2012 Rihanna had a huge hit with ‘Diamonds’, which was also written by Sia. Sledgehammer, which was written by Rihanna and Sia, was released on Monday morning and will serve as the first single from the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack. Many fans may have noticed that Rihanna's vocal contribution to the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack is reminiscent of Sia, and it should, because the haunting ballad 'Sledgehammer' was written by the shy Australian singer and songwriter. It is not the first time that the pop star from Barbados works together with the ‘Chandelier’ hit maker. Rihanna has been travelling the globe on her 7th world tour promoting her 8th studio album Anti. Rihanna co-wrote the track together with Jesse Shatkin and Sia.
